Building Equality: Employers
There a number of ways in which employers can build equality or mainstream equality into their organisations.
Structures and methods that organisations can use to mainstream include:
- Develop and implement an equalities policy that commits to equal treatment and access for everybody who interacts with the organisation including, customers, service users, employees, suppliers etc.
- Audit the organisation's work regularly to ensure that it is delivering on its objectives towards equal opportunities and diversity.
- Evaluate the impact on equalities of any new work.
- Positive action in recruitment and selection procedures through targets and training.
- Provide equality training for employees and volunteers.
- Appoint someone within the organisation with the responsibility to ensure that equalities becomes part of every aspect of the organisation's work.
- Engage in regular consultation with people affected by equality policies e.g. minority ethnic, and disabled people.
- Monitor the impact of work and policies on equal opportunities. This includes developing ways to monitor the workforce in all areas of diversity.
In all cases, it is important that the commitment to mainstream equality comes from all parts of the organisation and goes beyond a commitment on paper.
